| Hyperpigmented skin (excess pigment or increased melanocytes) may occur as a result of sun exposure (solar lentigines), hormone fluctuation (melasma), freckles, nevus (mole or beauty mark), chronic dermatitis and cancer.
Pigmentation problems result from abnormal pigment production by the melanocyte cells and an uneven distribution of melanin over the skin surface. Melanin acts as a filter, protecting the skin from the harmful effect of the sun’s radiation and appears as brown discoloration in the skin. Tanning of the skin is the body's response to protect itself against internal skin damage from UV light. When melanocytes produce greater amounts of pigment than can be absorbed by the keratin cells, melanin clusters develop, as in the case of age spots. Melasma occurs as a result of hormonal imbalances caused by pregnancy, birth control pills, or menopause. Brown spots can also occur as a result of surface irritation caused by acne, wounding, or chemical sensitivity. Pigment correcting treatments inhibit tyrosinase enzymes responsible for melanin production, and simultaneously remove cells that contain abnormal amounts of melanin
