Primary vs. Secondary Headaches

Problems with overactive pain-sensitive structures in your head may result in a primary headache, which is not a symptom of an underlying disease or other condition. Many factors within your body can play a role in primary headaches, including:

  • Muscles of your head and neck
  • Nerves and blood vessels
  • Brain’s chemical activity

You may also be genetically predisposed for a headache condition.

The most common types of primary headaches are:

  • Migraines- known by an intense pulsating or throbbing in one area of your head. May include significant pain, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, vomiting and nausea.
  • Cluster headaches– cyclical pattern (or cluster) of headaches which can be painful and disrupt sleep. A period of headaches is typically followed by a remission period.
  • Tension headaches– may affect the front, top or sides of your head and may have a squeezing or clamping sensation. This is the most common type of headache in adults.

Secondary headaches can be caused by a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Some of these include:

  • Blood clots
  • Arterial tears
  • Aneurysms
  • Concussions
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Ear infections
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Glaucoma
  • Dental issues
